After a protracted melee, the European super-soldiers helped their allies strip Thor of his belt, the source of his powers, and placed Thor in custody. super-soldiers - Captain Britain, Captain Spain (Carlos Fraile), Captain France (Hugo Etherlinck) and Captain Italy (Umberto Landi) - accompanied the Ultimates to Norway to confront Thor. decided Thor had become a dangerous liability who needed to be apprehended. One of Brian's earliest missions prior to this unveiling was to raise a downed submarine, assisted by two fellow E.D.I. member states in various states of readiness, the E.D.I. With twelve other candidates from the E.U. Soon after this, Brian perfected his armor and took the codename Captain Britain. (the British branch of S.H.I.E.L.D.), was possessed by the rogue mutant David Xavier and slain by the X-Men, though the family soon learned she had survived by taking over the body of a long-term coma victim. Personal tragedy hit the Braddocks when Brian's sister Betsy, a Psi agent of S.T.R.I.K.E. Despite this setback, the project continued working to create a European Union equivalent of the Ultimates taskforce forming in the United States. Allegedly Thorlief Golman stole the Norwegian team's successful prototypes to become Thor. Brian worked on designing an exo-suit which could enhance the wearer's abilities. Each member country provided a team that worked on its own designs, with the elder Braddock overseeing the project as a whole. Inheriting the scientific aptitude of his bio-engineer father, Sir James Braddock, Brian eventually joined him at the Dome in Brussels, working for the European Defense Initiative's super-soldier program. The Captain Britain Corps might be exactly what the Marvel multiverse needed, and it could escalate Betsy Braddock into one of Earth-616's single most important mutant leaders. As a teenager, Brian Braddock was fascinated by the World War II super-soldier Captain America, even hanging a poster of the hero in his room at Fettes College, his Edinburgh boarding school. With their help, threats that cross dimensional borders could be better handled - and thanks to the magical potential of Otherworld and the Corps as a whole, they could provide assistance that the more tech-heavy and physicality-based multiversal heroes can offer. This could set up the Captain Britain Corps to become dedicated defenders of the entire multiverse, with a prominent Earth-616 hero at the lead. Thanks to their abilities to cross worlds, they could offer support to other multiversal bands of heroes (such as the team being assembled in Avengers Forever, or the Spider-Heroes tied together through the Web of Life and Destiny). Now, with the Earth-616 Betsy at the lead and Prestige by her side, the Captain Britain Corps could prove a crucial peacekeeping force for the multiverse. However, they've been primarily mired in Otherworld conflict. A new Corps, structured around Betsy instead of Brian Braddock, was borne out of the events of X of Swords. In the past, the Captain Britain Corps was a united multiversal front - but they were largely wiped out in the build up to Secret Wars. This is a big step for Betsy Braddock, and a potentially major boon for the heroes of the Marvel multiverse. The story ends with Betsy and Rachel - who recently confirmed their romance - uniting with the rest of the Captain Britain Corps to patrol and protect the Marvel multiverse as a whole. With the help of Rachel Summers' Askani powers, the whole multiverse could be opened up to the Corps, who seek to protect the entire multiverse instead of just serving the interests of Otherworld's ruler. With Otherworld now somewhat free, Betsy reveals her new intention - to patrol the multiverse. Speaking to all three, Betsy makes it clear that she's still angry with Saturnynne, is frustrated with former ally Roma, and furious with Merlyn - professing no loyalty to the former two and seemingly killing the latter. After the battle with Merlyn is won - thanks largely to the creation of a new Krakoa Gate in the Mister M controlled region of Otherworld - Captain Britain decides she's had it with the power players of Otherworld trying to use her as a pawn in their plans.Īs time passed, Betsy decided that every effort to court her loyalty was a bid to take command of the Captain Britain Corp - and Betsy is tired of it. As the sworn protector of Otherworld and the champion of the Starlight Citadel, Betsy has increasingly showcased her full abilities and potential. An experienced hero in her own right, Betsy has found herself confronting a whole new level of challenges as a result of her position. At the heart of Knights of X - and the Excalibur series that proceeded it - has been Betsy Braddock, aka the current Captain Britain.
